Airtificial: electric vehicles for the mining industry

Madrid, 9 July 2025 – Airtificial advances its diversification strategy by entering the specialized electric mobility sector for vehicles and machinery in the mining industry. Its Intelligent Robots division has signed a major contract with Himesa, a leading company in Engineering, Services, Maintenance, Communications, Mobility, and Sustainability for the mining sector. Himesa specializes in providing comprehensive services for custom-designed machinery in critical industries such as mining. The project, with a duration of less than one year, is structured in two phases to complete the development, manufacturing, and turnkey delivery of cutting-edge technology for testing and verifying batteries intended for electric vehicles in the mining sector.

The mining industry, in its ongoing pursuit of sustainability, is increasingly adopting and implementing electric mobility solutions and vehicles, both in underground and open-pit mining operations. The latest advancements in battery technology now enable these vehicles to operate effectively in demanding environments, supporting material extraction and transportation to their final destinations. These are high-power machines designed to handle extremely heavy loads and endure intensive work cycles.

This cutting-edge technological project will be carried out in Spain and is structured in two phases. The first phase involves the development of testing equipment for battery modules of up to 10 kW. In the second phase, the equipment will be upgraded to extend testing capacity to 300 kW. Airtificial’s intelligent testing system will feature a proprietary end-to-end traceability solution, enabling comprehensive monitoring of each individual battery.

Guillermo Fernández de Peñaranda, CEO of Airtificial, stated: “This project represents a small yet significant step in our strategy of diversification and growth. Entering the battery testing market for electric mining vehicles opens the door for us to address the electrification of all types of industrial vehicles. We see vast opportunities ahead to explore and capture. This is only possible thanks to the deep expertise and talent within this company and its teams.”

The electrification of mining machinery represents a key advancement in reducing CO₂ emissions, improving air quality in underground mines, and lowering operating costs related to fuel and maintenance. Moreover, the transition towards electric fleets in mining supports global decarbonization and sustainability goals in industries traditionally characterized by high energy consumption.

This contract marks another milestone for Airtificial, which pursues a strategy of cross-disciplinary knowledge integration across the Group to generate operational synergies and leverage its proprietary know-how in cutting-edge technologies to enter new industries.
