Airtificial signs a €7.8 million automotive robotics contract
- A German Tier – 1 supplier once again turns to Airtificial, awarding it a contract worth nearly €8 million for the supply of three intelligent, robotised production lines for the manufacture of electric and hybrid vehicles.
- The intelligent robotised lines will be used in the manufacturing process of powertrain generators and electronic inverters for vehicles.
Madrid, 5 January 2026. Airtificial has been awarded a €7.8 million contract for the manufacture of three new intelligent, robotised assembly lines for a major German automotive Tier-1 supplier in Europe. This is the second contract of this nature awarded by the German Tier-1 to Airtificial in just three years. “This new award confirms the German market’s confidence in the technological robustness, operational reliability and scalability of our intelligent industrial technology,” said Guillermo Fernández de Peñaranda, CEO of Airtificial.
The project includes the design, manufacture, integration and commissioning of three automatic assembly lines, to be developed by Airtificial Intelligent Robots under a turnkey model, covering all phases of the industrial cycle. The manufacturing lead time for each line is 36 weeks, and production will take place at Airtificial’s manufacturing facility in Manresa, on the outskirts of Barcelona. Once manufactured and fully tested, the lines will be transferred to the customer’s plant, with the objective of starting production in the last quarter of 2026. Bringing a project of this complexity into production in less than a year represents a significant industrial milestone for Airtificial, reflecting the automotive market’s increasing competitiveness requirements and the need to accelerate execution timelines to maintain technological leadership in Europe.
In mild hybrid vehicles, the powertrain generator and its electronic inverter form the core of the energy management system. The generator assists the internal combustion engine during peak demand situations, such as start-up and acceleration, and enables energy recovery during braking or deceleration phases, contributing to a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions.
This system not only improves the vehicle’s overall efficiency but also enhances performance and driving comfort by smoothing engine response and enabling limited purely electric manoeuvring and parking. In addition, the generator provides extra-torque that allows the use of advanced electrical components, such as the air-conditioning compressor, ensuring climate control operation even when the combustion engine is switched off, for example at traffic lights or during coasting.
The electronic inverter, meanwhile, acts as the intelligent component that coordinates the entire energy flow of the hybrid system. It converts the direct current (DC) stored in the battery into alternating current (AC) to power the electric motor and, conversely, transforms the energy generated during regenerative braking into direct current to recharge the battery. Thanks to this precise management, the inverter ensures efficient, stable and coordinated operation of both electric propulsion and the vehicle’s auxiliary systems.
Improving the manufacturing processes of powertrain generators and their inverters enables advances in industrial efficiency and scalability. The automation solutions developed by Airtificial help optimise key parameters such as cycle time, which for these lines is 100 seconds. Airtificial Intelligent Robots works with more robust components, improved energy management and solutions aligned with the growing requirements for efficiency, emissions reduction and performance demanded by automotive manufacturers.
Guillermo Fernández de Peñaranda, CEO of Airtificial, added: “This award strengthens the confidence of major European manufacturers in Airtificial’s ability to develop and replicate complex industrial solutions with the highest standards of quality, reliability and efficiency. The repetition of these production-validated lines clearly demonstrates our positioning as a long-term technology partner in key projects for the transition towards more efficient and sustainable mobility. All of these robotics projects for vehicles can also be applied to the defence sector, where we are also working very actively.”
